people I got "NO")(so much for cutoff date Jan 1, 2007)
NO.2 Now it costs $45 for a NAA sporting license, how much was it
before? It had to be $ 0 since our dues didn't go down.
If NAA charged $0 for our licensing fee our "old good guys"
should have informed us of the screw up with NAA of the cost to become
$45.

FAI Sporting Licenses

The responsibility for issuing FAI Sporting Licenses in the United
States rests with the National Aeronautics Association (NAA). Under an
arrangement with NAA, SSA has been distributing Sporting Licenses for
Soaring to SSA members as one of our member benefits. At the time of
the arrangement, NAA required applicants for FAI badges to hold
Sporting Licenses. Recently, NAA has dropped this requirement.

Under a new arrangement, NAA and SSA have agreed that a Sporting
License is required for participation in international events, world
records, and US national records only. Please note that YOU MUST HAVE a
Sporting License BEFORE you take off on a record attempt. A Sporting
License is not required for badges, diplomas, US contests, state
records, US trophies, lennie pins, nor the Hilton Cup.

In 2005, fewer than 25 members participated in the events listed above
requiring Sporting Licenses, and for this reason, SSA has decided to
stop paying NAA a per-member fee for Sporting Licenses and to stop
issuing licenses to members. SSA members who need to renew their
Sporting Licenses should contact NAA directly (www.naa.aero,
800-644-9777). The effective date of this change is January 1, 2007,
and SSA will stop issuing Sporting Licenses on that date.


We are continuing our discussions with NAA, and we will strive to
reduce the cost of Sporting Licenses (currently $45 per year) for our

SSA informed the membership 8 weeks ago. I remember reading
it. You must have been too busy planning your next world-record attempt.

I think the decision of SSA not to pay for my NAA Sporting License was
correct, since I will never need one. Far better that portion of my
dues, and the dues of 11,000 other members who will never need the
Sporting License, should go to support the SSA itself.

I'll have to jump to RW's defense here a little. The announcement said
it was effective Jan. 1. If he renewed earlier, he should have gotten
the sporting licence renewal included. If an organization puts out an
announcement like this, the one group you should be able to count on
for following the announcement exactly is the group that put out the
announcement.

It seems the SSA has not updated this in a while but the sporting
license fee they seemed to pay on our behalf in 2004 was $10. See #2
on the list. http://www.ssa.org/society/Membership.asp It seems if
you join the NAA for $39 per year you get the license included with the
membership. Save 6 bucks there.

Was the SSA getting a deal that was not passed on to us? Did the NAA
raise the fee 450% in the last three years? I can't imagine the SSA
was paying 70% of our dues for this so I'm guessing it was a deal not
passed on. Maybe we should get that same deal as a group? But then
why have the sporting license if you don't intend to use it. I doubt I
ever will.

Sounds like the SSA is taking measures to conserve income.......good
for them.

For those couple dozen that need the Sporting Lic, I think it makes
most sense that they pay it on their own, rather than the SSA pay for
an undertimed number of these things and have all the unused go to
waste.

With all the other costs associated with the pilots efforts I don't
think that spending $45 will break them, and hardly a reason to call
the SSA a bunch of liars.

Lets just say they are doing what it takes to survive and leave it at
that!

These are tough times for the SSA .... lets cut them some slack and let
them heal.

If you have ever contributed time working with such an organization you
will apprreciate how difficult it is to make everyone happy with the
limited resources they now are faced with.
